Overall, tiling window managers can be a powerful tool for maximising your productivity and screen real estate, but they're not for everyone. This could be a barrier for those who are less technically inclined or simply don't have the time or interest to learn how to code. While it is possible to copy other peoples' configuration file off of places such as GitHub, customising the window manager to work exactly how you want it may require some programming skills. □ Understand Code: It helps to have some basic knowledge of coding logic or the ability to code in order to configure Yabai to your specific needs. However, some features of Yabai, like modifying windows, spaces, and displays, require SIP to be disabled. SIP protects certain files and directories from being modified, even from the root user. □️ Disabling SIP: Yabai requires System Integrity Protection (SIP) to be partially disabled, which can expose the system to security vulnerabilities. This can be particularly true for applications that rely heavily on floating windows, such as some graphics editors or video players. □ Compatibility: Some applications may not be designed to work well with tiling window managers, and may not display correctly or behave as expected. It can be frustrating at first, but with practice, it becomes much more intuitive. □ Learning Curve: Using a keyboard-driven window manager takes some getting used to.□ Multitasking: Tiling window managers make it easy to multitask with multiple applications, since all windows are visible on the screen at once. This can help you stay organised and focused on the task at hand. □ Workspaces: Tiling window managers often include support for workspaces, which allow you to organise your applications into different virtual desktops.I don't have to take my hand off the keyboard or search for the mouse, which can break my concentration. □ Focus: By removing the need for the mouse, I find I can stay more focused on my work. So, if you're going to spend countless hours on your computer, investing in a keyboard that's comfortable and easy on your hands could make a world of difference in terms of both productivity and long-term health. However, it's important to keep in mind that relying on a keyboard to improve hand posture will only be effective if the keyboard is designed to be ergonomic. □ Preventing CTS: Using a keyboard-driven tiling window manager can help keep the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) demons at bay by reducing excessive mouse usage. This means I can tailor the window manager to my specific workflow and preferences. □ Customisation: Yabai allows for extensive customisation, including custom key bindings and layouts. With just a few keystrokes, I can move and resize windows, switch between them, and even move them to different spaces. □ Efficiency: Using the keyboard for window management is much faster than using the mouse. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of using a keyboard-driven window manager such as Yabai: Advantages: This may seem daunting at first, but once you get used to it, it becomes second nature. To put it simply, Yabai allows me to control and manipulate windows with just the keyboard. While alternatives like Rectangle or Magnet add shortcuts and window snapping, they don't align well with Aqua's workflow - at least in my humble opinion. That is until I discovered Yabai, a window manager for MacOS.Īqua is the default window management system on MacOS. When I switched to MacOS, I was disappointed with the lack of options for window management. As a long-time user of Linux □, I was always drawn to the flexibility and power of window managers. ![]()
